Modern Bagpipe Tuning and Pitch

Bagpipe tuning pitch for some bagpipe bands and bagpipe players are considered to be a wee bit on the high side.

If you browse the bagpipe forums there is a lot of chatter about going back to the the deep, slightly deeper sound of yesteryear, yet retaining a certain good brightness of sound.

Bill makes the following comment:

“The rather high pitch of some top pipe bands and top solo pipers is of concern to me and some others of note. Do you think the pitch is too high and why? My thoughts are that in many cases yes - the higher pitch results in the chanters being rather thin in volume and almost shrill sounding causing a loss of tonal richness and good balance.”
