A Comprehensive Beginners Guide

These bagpipe tutorials are designed for those who wish to have good detailed guidance right from the beginning of learning how to play the Highland Bagpipe. It is also a valuable tool for providing or conducting bagpipe tuition.
  • The bagpipe tutorials in this package, starts you with a practice chanter taking you through the various exercises, suitable tunes and progressively on to the pipes.
  • The text has illustrations, music examples with instructions, accompanied by many audio and video demonstration. Which endeavor to leave as little as possible to your imagination. Bill breaks down the lesson into segments and talks you through each section so that you can perfect your technique.
  • Exercises on technique etc., are numerous and interspersed with simple tunes relative to the preceding exercises. Teachers, naturally, can have flexibility with tune selections.

A Comprehensive Guide In Three Sections - Light Music, Maintenance and Piobaireachd

These bagpipe tutorials go further than most Highland Bagpipe lessons in guiding pipers (and teachers) who have the desire and aptitude to improve their standard of Highland Piping.

In this Comprehensive Guide there are three sections:

  • The Light Music Section in each category guides the piper and bands from the simpler tunes through to the competition type tunes. Technique, expression, rhythms, and clarity of execution are explained and broken down where necessary. Extra tunes are provided as well. Band hints are interspersed through the bagpipe tutorials.
  • The Maintenance Section covers general care, hide bag tying in, binding of joints, reed selection, reed setting, reed manipulation, sound quality, tuning for soloist and bands with additional hints.
  • The Piobaireachd Section deals with how to execute correct strong technique in piobaireachd, including timing, variations, relevant extracts, categories, structures, phrasing, how to interpret the written scores, guidelines and extra piobaireachd tutorials.

Bill Robertson's tutor: This tutor is on a DVD, with files for two books - a beginners tutor and a more advanced "comprehensive" tutor - that can be printed out. The books include a number of historic regimental photos interspersed throughout. The DVD also has audio files, video files, and pdf's of some tunes in addition to what is in the tutors. If you read the lessons off your computer, you can click on links to audio and video files relevant to the lesson. Most tutors are aimed at the beginner piper. After that, most of us are at the mercy of the skills of our instructors in learning how to interpret tunes. Robertson's Comprehensive tutor has extensive written information and extensive audio files that explain and demonstrate many useful pointers about the correct interpretation of all the kinds of marches, airs, strathspey's, reels, hornpipes, jigs, and had material on piobaireachd that I haven't had time to go through yet. I think there is a wealth of information on this DVD for both the student and for the instructor who wants to improve instructional skills. The approach is pretty traditional, with no modern kitchen piping type stuff - but is great for building a solid understanding of how tunes should be played, and common pitfalls that many experienced pipers make...

TESTIMONIAL
Hi Bill,
The DVD's arrived today safe and sound. I won't be at practice tonight, but I'll get Glenn's to him either over the weekend or next week. I just sat down with the intention of looking it over for a quick minute or two and a half hour later I am forcing myself to stop! This collection is absolutely INCREDIBLE! My God, Bill! You've got everything here! It's like a university course - the instructions for each tune, the histories, the videos, the extra documentation about the music, and so on. WOW! As we say here in the States, I am "totally blown away!" I can't wait to get this over to Glenn...

Great job! Man, am I impressed!

Mark
