Bagpipes vs practise chanter for learning

by Stew
(Western Australia)

Hi there. I have recently started learning how to play the bagpipes. I have been using a practise chanter but a couple of days ago I had a friend let me have a go on his bagpipes and I actually found this easier to play than the practise chanter. It felt more natural and easier to breathe. Is this normal or am I just strange?

Bagpipes vs practice chanter for learning.

Yes, Stew, it is rather strange.
The pipes take some good maintenance, good reeds set well, and eventually well tuned. The practice chanter (long span preferred) is simple to maintain with essentially just the simple reed keep right along with you blowing and given exercises etc., in progressive stages correctly etc. So, I implore you to stick with a good simple practice chanter, progress well towards the time for commencing to play the pipes (see the two last questions just before this one).
T trust that helps - All the best for the festive Season,

Bill R
