Call off before playing

by Chris
(Grand Rapids, MI)

Hi, I'm a student in high school and my band teacher and I trying to form a pipe band considering we are the fighting scots. We have already played at football games and other school events and even some non-school events. We were wondering how to call off a set before the band plays? For example, I heard other pipe bands say something like "Quick March" then something else. We were wondering how we would go about calling off the pipe band so we look more professional.

Call off before playing NEW
by: Bill Robertson

The usual command in the military and most likely civilan pipe bands is: "By the right - quick march" or "By the left - Quick march", or "By the centre/center - Quick march. The "Quick march" call shoulfd be at the cadence/tempo of that itneded for the music to be played i.e. Scotland the Brave might be wanted at 96 BPM, or a 6/8 march might be about the same, although if for musical entertainment/enjoyment etc., a bit slower tempo - or for parade for others to march to might be about 112 BPM gave a or a take a second or two.
The Drum major if on parade usually gaves the call. When not on parade the Pipe mMjor may so do, or he/she gets the leading drummer to call at the aggredd tempo. We pipers do not like the USA apparent desire to march too quickly, but more stately especially when on our own.
I trust that helps - all the best
Bill
