The Company's Lament

The Company's Lament may have been composed by Joseph MacDonald who wrote the Treatise, A Compleat Theory of the Scots Highland Bagpipe circa 1770/73. This was at a time immediately prior to the dissolution of the great MacCrimmon school of piping at Boreraig.

The tune (untitled) is one of two marches (spaisdearach in the Gaelic) included in MacDonald's Treatise. The tune is meant to be played while walking about but not as a march as we know it today. It may have been written before MacDonald went to India to join the East India Company.

His inspiration for the tune is unknown. Researchers seem to agree that the company was not the East India Company.
