Getting a sound but no low notes!

So I just got my pipes, standard beginner highland bagpipes, redwood with imitation decorative aluminum stuff. Whatever it's all called. Anyway, I finally got my reed to be easy enough to play on, but I can't get the bottom two notes. The come out sounding like chewbacca is getting grabbed by his jewels. Anything I can do to hit those notes?

Two things come to mind. Make sure your fingers are relaxed, and completely covering the holes. Try backing off on pressure, as you may be overblowing the read (especially if it is very easy or soft to begin with). Incomplete hole coverage,and overblowing the reed are two things that will cause the sound that you described. Good Luck!

Sounds like you have a cheap set of Pakistani pipes. Get to good teacher or a competent piper who knows how to set up pipes. You can't make it alone.
