The original first edition book with audio tapes of the advanced Great Highland
Bagpipe, a Comprehensive Guide 1998 by Pipe Major WA Robertson
Reviewed by the late Donald Bain of Temuka, Multiple Gold Medalist No one who experienced the performance of Auckland and District (Innes Tartan) Pipe Band in the late 60's and 70's would doubt the credentials of Bill Robertson to produce a publication such as this. The tone, technique and expression of that was refreshing and raised the standard of pipe band music to a level not previously heard in New Zealand ... This not a basic tutor, but to quote from page 1 "the intention is to show pipers who have reasonable ability how to improve rhythm, controlled expression (style) and clarity of techniques." Nothing is left to chance; all facts of bagpipe maintenance, tuning, technique, rhythm and performance are covered. It only remains for the individual to add his or her personal color to produce optimum potential effect. But as we who have experience teaching piping know, aptitude is important but attitude is more so...
"I have studied the book and tapes in detail. I am very impressed with your attention to detail and explanation
of technique - not been a book like this before"
- Andrew Wright (Champion Piper)
