The tune commemorates the death in 1789 of Sir Alexander's wife, Lady Elizabeth Diana MacDonald, a native of Yorkshire. She had married Sir Alexander in 1768. Her mother-in-law was the beloved Lady Margaret MacDonald, also the recipient of a Salute.
