Munro's Salute

Munro's Salute is an early tune of Iain Dall MacKay, the blind piper of Gairloch. The tune was composed to honor his patron at that period in his life, Robert Munro, 23rd Chieftain of Clan Munro. Like his cousin the composer, Chieftain Robert was also blind. He died in 1729.

The two men were distantly related by marriages between the family of Donald Duaghal MacKay and the Munros. Iain Dall's mother was an illegitimate daughter of Donald Duaghal, Lord Reay, whence the family connection.

These two clans had a close link over a period of 300 years, a remarkable achievement in the turbulent Highlands of old.
