My Bagipe Sounds Like a Duck?

by Marc
(California, USA)

Ok, so I have a brand new McCallum practice chanter as I recently decided to start playing. As the title implies, my chanter sounds essentially like a duck (hard to explain otherwise). I have watched videos on YouTube and read my tutorial book, and I have all the finger positions down. I am not quite sure what is wrong, and if it is my fault or the chanter or reed.

I can attach pictures of the reed and chanter if needed.

My bagpipe Sounds Like a Duck?
by: Bill Robertson

Hello Mark,
I appears that your practice chanter reed when secured evenly in the aperture for the reed might not be set firmly in position. If OK, then the reed itself could be at fault. Try to find a piper of reasonable merit in your district to help. Alternatively you could send photos to me directly at bagpiper1@slingshot.co.nz for scrutiny.
Regards,

Bill R
