Pipe Major The Royal Scots

by Brian Burns
(Edinburgh)

Question

Hi Bill, just a short note to ask if you know my uncle Robert Burns who was a Pipe Major in the Royal Scots , my father Billy and his brother Alec were also in the 1st Batt in Aden.....kind regards Brian Burns

Bill's Reply

Thank you, Brian. Yes, I served with Bobby Burns who succeeded me as Pipe Major of the 1st. Bn. The Royal Scots about 1959 0r 1960. We kept in touch occasionally.

Recently I had heard that Bobby was working/living back in Edinburgh. I tried unsuccessfully, to get in touch through friends who knew him. It would appreciate getting in touch with Bobby if you could give me contact details for him. Please use mu website contact form to do this. This link will take you there http://www.bagpipe-tutorials.com/contact.html

I trust he is fit and well like myself. I know there was another relative with the same name Pipe Major of The Royal Scots some good years later.

Best wishes,
Robbie – as Bobbie knows me

Hello Aad,
All can say is that message below your one mentions R S Burns of 1959-67 as Robert Stevenson Burns so that you can at least have that Middle name.
Despipe my efforts I have been unable to get finformation to help me make contact with R.S Burns of my time.
My middle name is: Anderson - in case you do not have it.
Any further information I might be able to help you with, simply ask at email: bagpiper1@slingshot.co.nz

by: Aad Boode

I am compiling a list of Pipe Majors of military Pipes & Drums worldwide and have at the moment details of over 2,000 P/Ms. As there is here a dicussion about Pipe Majors with the surname Burns, could anyone help me with some additional information about the following P/Ms of the 1st Bn:
Burns, Robert S. (1959-1967)
Burns, Stuart J. (1984-1986)
Burns, Robert (1986-1990)
In particular I would like to know their middle names, year and place of birth and if deceased the year and place of death.
Your help will be appreciated.
Aad

P/M Burns took me into the band 1963 and I`ve never looked back. After my days in the army I played with bands such as Muirhead and Sons, Shotts and Dykehead and Toyota.Travelling all over the world playing my pipes at all sorts of functions. Even as recently as April this year I was playing at a wedding in Japan.I`m 67 now and still playing away and doing a lot of teaching and still loving it thanks to Robert Stevenson Burns.

One evening in 1960 after listening to the duty piper playing after last post The Heroes of Kohima.I told the the young lad that I had learned to play the pipes at school. the Pipe Major then was Bobby Burns. Next day he came and rescued me from jail and I was on my way to my first Edinburgh Tattoo. Unfortunatley He was persuaded by Black Joe Dempsey to put me in the Novices boxing competition. I then spent six years between the pipe band and the boxing team. God bless Major Eves Pay Corps .Charlie Caven Regimental PTI.
I would love to find out how Bobby is and get in touch. jjlcollins@live.co.uk Up the Royals

Jimmy, Stuart, and Alex Burns by Mandy
by: AnonymousBill Robertson

Hello Mandy,
The best I can do for you, if you like, is to send you copies of photographs of Jimmy and Alex Burns around the mid 1950s when with the 1st Bn. The Royal Scots and when I served along with them from time to time.

I assume these two are likely to be the ones you mentioned.

I would need an e mail address to send the photos to you. Please send it to me using my website Contact Form.

Over to you, and all the best,
Robbie (Bill)

You are correct in that P/M George Fraser took over from me. Bobby Burns who I recommended for the P/M Course about that time took over soon from George who I think was ex the Seaforth Highlanders.
Best wishes,
Bill/Robbie

re Alex Burns etc
by: Tricia

Hi, sorry in the late reply, (for some reason I thought you would email me,) and thankyou for your reply, didn't know my uncle Boabby was so gifted....and it's nice to know.
Unfortunately my Dad (Alex) passed away 12 years ago, and I have lost contact with the family as it was he who kept me updated with the family.
I do believe Jimmy has 'gone' also, the only name I can think of who could help you would be Maj Bill Sutherland Rtd, up at Edinburgh castle.
It was lovely to hear from you.
Fondest regards
Tricia

Pipe Major The Royal Scots
by: Bill Robertson

Hello Tricia,
Great to hear from you. Yes, he is the same Boaby. Your dad Alex I take it, is the same who served with me for some time earlier in my time, and brother of Roaby and Jimmy also with me some time in the regiment. I have some photos that I sent to another Robert Burns who was later P/M when I was trying to trace Bobby as we knew him.
I had no satisfactory reply about Bobby.

I would be greatful if you would let me know how Boaby is keeping if still with us, and how I may be able to contact him. Any other information on Alex and Jimmy would also be appreciated.

If you require any other information please contact me via the website Contact Form

All the best,
Robbie - as I was known
