Ring finger trouble...

by Dustin Butzin
(Granite Falls, MN USA)

Hello Mr. Robertson.
I'm a beginning piper and a long time guitar player. One thing I've always had trouble with (especially now on the practice chanter with certain movements) is independant control of my ring finger. I know for certain things it is imperative that you be able to move the ring and little fingers at the same time (like on the grip to B) or by itslef (the grip from D). Is there any advice you can offer on how to build this ability?

- Dustin

Ring Finger trouble
by: Bill Robertson

Hello Dustin,
I think everyone has trouble with the dexterity of the ring or third finger which is naturally a weak finger. You have to accept like others and myself that it is a weak finger and execute as well as you can and deliberate very slightly the execution where the third finger is involved yet without disturbing the rhythm of what you are playing.Over time and effort the finger will fall into place. No need to worry over it.
All the best,
Bill
