It is unfortunate, sometimes, that a person puts in a lot of time into learning how to play but lacks opportunities to learn the myriad of things that are required to put all that fingering and blowing together.

I have seen a few bands that were helpless without their pipe major to take care of all the 'before' and 'after' tasks to keep their pipes playable. It keeps one person too busy, but, I suppose, creates a bit of job security for him.
