These are excellent particularly the history and the demonstration of how not to play certain parts. A small sugestion for those like myself not familiar with piper's terminology. Please explain terms like " pointing ", " playing up ", " playing into it " ?

Two months ago I watched and rewatched your lesson on Paddies Breetches. For the first time in my life I can almost play a jig. It has been of great encouragement to my necessarily solo learning.

Pointing etc
by: Anonymous

Thank you Bill for explaining this. You are right of course your excellent demonstration do illustrate the meaning for the tune.

Your explanation helps in a broader sense too. I recall a statement about piping that ' tunes were played with more pointing at one time '. I don't recall the source. It just came to mind when you used the term in reference to your tutorial.

I very much value the traditions of the Highland Pipe especially those bequeathed by the many labors of the Regiments. These old soldiers have gone glimmering but they have left the music and the standard. It is a a privilege for me to hear you play, to see how you play the music and to learn some of the history.

Respectfully,

Tom McCurdy

Pointing is the dotted and cut relativity to tied notes usually in a beat.
Up and down could mean up tempo and down tempo - i.er. more lively or less lively/more relaxed.
I trust that helps, although the demonstartions relevant should have convied the meaning.
All the best,
Bill
